Mission Statement:
The Slusser Senior Center will provide a place where the senior community of Hopkinton can meet together to pursue mutual interests, receive health and educational services and participate in social and recreational activities that will enhance their dignity, support their independence and encourage their continues involvement in and with the community. The Center strives to create a space that feels welcoming, comfortable, safe and accessible.

Hours of Operation:
Monday through Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm. The building may be opened on weekends or during off hours based upon programming schedules. All requests must be approved by the Recreation Director.
The Slusser Senior Center is a public building owned by the Town of Hopkinton and under its jurisdiction. The building is subject to all appropriate local, state and federal rules, regulations and ordinances. The building is operated under the Recreation Department and under the direction of the Recreation Director.
The building is not available for rent. When the building is completely finished and after a period of assessment, a rental policy will be re-evaluated. Columbia Hall, owned by the Town of Hopkinton, remains available for rent.
The Slusser Senior Center is open to the public, however, preference in programming is given to seniors activities. Seniors are defined as persons 50 years of age or older. Building use, programs and services are available for such seniors. Non-residents are welcomed as long as space allows. Preference will be given to those seniors who reside in the Hopkinton/Contoocook area. At times small children may be on the premises. For the safety of all, children should not be left unattended. Children, young adults and adults may be in the center while involved in programs approved by the Recreation Director.
All patrons of the center will be asked to fill out a membership/registration form. The forms will be kept confidential and kept on file at the center. The purpose of the form is to have vital information in case of an emergency. Membership is FREE to both residents and non-residents. There may be a cost associated with some programs and services.
General Rules:
All programs, services, classes, meals, etc. will fall under the auspices of the Recreation Department. Any fee for such activity shall be collected by the Recreation Department and used for senior services. Some services will be under the direction of Human Services (food pantry, Dial-a-Ride, other social services).
No solicitations or private sales may take place in the Slusser Senior Center. Program providers may present information about services, but can not solicit business. Furthermore, no outside organization can solicit contributions, accept donations, sell items, or conduct fundraising within the building, unless approved by the Recreation Director.
Any organization or individual that conducts an activity (sponsored by the Recreation Department) that has a fee may be reimbursed for supplies bought as long as receipts are submitted and it is pre-approved by the Center Director. This includes meals such as senior lunch. Any excess money will go back into the revolving fund for the senior center.
The Slusser Senior Center does accept material donations that can be used for the senior center or programming needs. Monetary gifts are also accepted and can be made out to “Hopkinton Recreation – Slusser Senior Center.” Funds will be used to support the needs of the center.
Smoking is not allowed in any part of the building or on the outdoor deck. You may smoke outside at least 15 feet from the entrance door.
Alcohol is NOT permitted in or around the building.
The use of open flames is not permitted inside the senior center. Exceptions are small flame-producing items such as candles on a cake, sterno devices to keep food warm and small votive candles placed in a secure container. These votive candles must be approved by the center director. Prohibited items include torches, incense, charcoal grills, candle centerpieces and fragrance candles.
Decorations must be approved by the Recreation Director and no decorations may be affixed to the walls.
No animals are allowed inside the building except for service animals or for programming needs approved by the center director.
Equipment assigned to the building shall remain on the premises unless arrangements are made through the Recreation Director. Books may be borrowed as long as they are signed out.
The building is wired for wireless Internet for all patrons. The public computer(s) are for patron use only and courtesy should be given if there is wait time. No computer shall be used for downloading of inappropriate material and no programs shall be installed without the permission of the center director.
Abusive language and disruptive behavior affecting patrons of the center or staff shall be reason to exclude an individual or group from the building following appropriate and specific warnings.
No patron or group shall have continual dominance of center facilities or equipment. No person or group shall exclude an individual from being part of any activity. Any such behavior shall be addressed by the center director.
If any patron or volunteer has a problem with facility operations, programming or with any other person they shall address this issue with the center director.
All users of the Slusser Senior Center shall be expected to share in the responsibility for its proper use, cleanliness and care. Treat this building as if it were your home.
Volunteers
Volunteers are an integral part of the Slusser Senior Center community. The daily activities and many of the programs, classes and meals will be run by volunteers. We are always looking for volunteers and if you are willing to help, we will find you a spot.
All volunteers associated with the Slusser Senior Center must strive to:
- Provide a welcoming, friendly atmosphere for all who visit
- Give each person individual attention and assistance as they require
- Maintain a safe and clean environment
- Be aware of your surroundings and maintain a professional attitude
- Arrive on time
All volunteers must fill out a volunteer application form available at the center or mailed upon request.
All volunteers must meet with either the volunteer coordinator or the center director prior to starting.
All volunteers must go through building and procedure training before they begin their duties. A procedure manual will be available.
All volunteers must wear their nametag at all times. When your shift is completed please leave your nametag in the basket at the center.
The center phone is for professional use only; it is strongly discouraged from public use. Seniors may use the phone by request only. Only local calls can be made, no long distance calls.
