Senior Lunch

Come to the Slusser Senior Center every Wednesday at 12:00 noon for a home-cooked meal. The Center is fortunate to have volunteer groups from all over who donate their time and efforts to cooking a wonderful meal. So come, eat, laugh, and make new friends! Suggested donation per person is $4.00.

We are always looking for volunteer groups to sponsor a meal. Call 746-2915 for more information.

PLEASE NOTE:  If a Wednesday Senior Lunch is cancelled due to weather, the Senior Lunch will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday of the same week at the Slusser Senior Center.


Community Breakfast Buffet (Cancelled until further notice)

Dates: Second Tuesday of each month (not held from June to October)
Time:   7:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m.
Cost:  Adults: $4.00   Children under age 10: $2.00
Location: Slusser Senior Center Dining Room

All Hopkinton and Contoocook residents are welcome to come anytime between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. to enjoy the new Community Breakfast Buffet, starting on Tuesday, November 10, 2009.  The breakfast buffet includes pancakes or French Toast, bacon and/or sausage, hashbrowns, eggs, toast, juice, coffee and tea -- and good company!

PLEASE NOTE:  The Community Breakfast Buffet has been cancelled until further notice.


Tea Social & Monthly Birthday Party

Dates: Third or Fourth Friday of each Month (not meeting from June through October, 2009)
Time:   2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.
Fee: None, but donations are always welcomed.
Location: Slusser Senior Center Dining Room

All Seniors age 50+ are welcome to the Tea Social and Birthday Party, which is held once a month, usually on the third or fourth Friday.  Birthdays are celebrated for everyone whose birthday occurs during that month.  Formal, hats and gloves are suggested.

This group is not meeting during from June through October, 2009.  

If a holiday party or other major event is scheduled on the third or fourth Friday of any given month, that month's birthdays will be celebrated at the same time (instead of scheduling a separate Tea Social and Birthday Party for that month). The Tea Social and Birthday Party is included in the monthly calendar of senior activities, which is available at the front desk at the Slusser Senior Center.  For more information, call the Slusser Senior Center at 746-3800.

Blood Pressure Screening

Blood pressure screenings are given every Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Slusser Senior Center on a first come, first served basis.  There is no cost.  PLEASE NOTE:  If no Senior Lunch is held on any given Wednesday, the Blood Pressure Screening will not be held.


VNA Health Clinic

A VNA Health Clinic is held at the Slusser Senior Center on the first Thursday of each month, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  The cost for each visit is $10.00.  Call 230-9431 ahead of time to make an appointment.


Line Dancing

Dates: Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays
Time:  10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
Fee:        Donations (any donation you wish to make will be accepted)
Location:  Slusser Senior Center
Instructor: Mary Merrill

For people who love to dance, line dancing provides the opportunity to learn dance routines that can be done without a partner.  This popular program continues to grow.  Not only is line dancing fun, but it is also good exercise and a time to socialize with others.  The "Country Gals Plus One" line dancing group has entertained at Presidential Oaks and Harris Hill Nursing Home.  "Plus One" refers to the only male in the group. Men are most welcome to join!  Line dancing is open to all Seniors age 50+, from beginners to experienced line dancers.  Instruction is available.

PLEASE NOTE:  As of September 1, 2009, there is no longer a separate Line Dancing class for Beginners.  Line Dancing is held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Slusser Senior Center.  All levels, from beginners to experienced line dancers, are welcome!


Chair Yoga

Dates: Mondays
Time:   1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m.
Fee:     Donations (any donation you wish to make will be accepted)

Instructor: Linda Hopper, Certified Kripalu Yoga Instructor

Aging gracefully is what we all want!  Chair yoga provides Seniors ages 50+ with a way to do just that.  The hour-long class emphasizes stretching, balancing, deep breathing, meditation, and, of course, relaxation.  The wide variety of yoga poses are done seated in a comfortable, straight back chair.  With regular practice, yoga can help achieve the following:

                        Increase strength and balance
                        Increase lung capacity
                        Strengthen the nervous system                                   
                        Bring clarity to the mind
                        Encourage a sense of peace                                      
                        Reduce stress
                        Increase mental energy

This class is for any Senior age 50+ who wishes to improve the quality of his or her life.  This is a beginner-friendly class, but all levels are welcome.


Strength & Balance Exercise Class

Dates: Mondays & Wednesdays
Time:   3:45 p.m.-5:00 p.m.
Fee:     Suggested $3.00 Donation
Location: Slusser Senior Center
Instructor: Melissa Smart

The purpose of the Strength and Balance Class is to provide weight training, stretching and balance exercises which will provide a foundation for increased quality of life for seniors and a place where seniors are encouraged to become stronger individuals.

The program is based on the former Strong Living Program developed by Tufts University.  The program consists of a series of lower body, core, and upper body exercises.  The instructor monitors the form of the individual participants and provides correction.  The individual participant determines the amount of weight lifted and is encouraged by the instructor to increase weights within the ability of the individual.  Stop in and watch a drop-in class, ongoing throughout the year.  Seniors age 50+, of all ability levels, are welcome.


Strength Exercises

Dates: Tuesdays & Thursdays
Time:   9:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m.
Location: Slusser Senior Center
Instructor: Gloria Symonds

Strength Exercise is a non-aerobic program designed for seniors to strengthen bones and improve balance, thereby helping seniors to maintain their independence.  Included in the program are exercise routines using ankle weights, hand weights, and also stretching and balance exercises.  Increasing weights adds to the intensity of the exercise program.  Participants are encouraged to increase ankle and hand weights gradually, or whenever they feel it is possible.  Seniors age 50+, of all ability levels, are welcome.


Silver Striders

Silver Striders is a walking program for Seniors age 50+.  In the winter months, the group meets at the High School Gym in Contoocook at the beginning of each walk.  The program is free, for all levels.  Come join us and stay fit!

The schedule (dates and times) is on the monthly calendar of activities, which can be picked up at the front desk at the Slusser Senior Center.  There is NO walking on snow days when the schools are closed, or when there is a delayed opening for the schools.  When school closes for the summer and when warm weather is here, the group walks around Houston Fields (behind the Hopkinton Library).  

We are looking for a Volunteer Coordinator for this activity.  Anyone who is interested in being the Volunteer Coordinator for the Silver Striders, please call Justin La Vigne, Hopkinton Recreation Director, at 746-2915.


Card Making

Dates and Times: Check the Monthly Calendar of Senior Activities (come in or call the Senior Center at 746-3800)

Location: Slusser Senior Center
Instructors: The "Card Girls"

Card making is the fun of creating or making a special card, for a special person, for a special reason.  The class makes the cards from cardstock, stamps, punches, embellishments and more.  It is a great way to socialize with others while creating something fun and being able to let the person know the card was made especially for them.  The people leading the class create the card and teach the participants how to make it and assemble it.


Iris Folding

Traditional Iris Folding is a technique which originated in Holland.  It is called iris folding because the center of the design resembles the iris of a camera or eye. Traditionally, origami paper is used for the main design and holographic paper is used to fill in the center of the design. Iris Folding is a fun and easy paper folding technique that can be used to make greeting cards, on scrapbook pages, or designs can be framed and hung on a wall. The texture and depth that you feel when handling an iris folded greeting card or scrapbook page is the best part!

Please sign up for Iris Folding at the front desk at the Slusser Senior Center. Classes in Iris Folding are held a few times a year.  For more information, call the Senior Center at 746-3800, or come in and pick up a calendar of monthly activities at the front desk.

Needlework Group

Dates: Every Thursday
Time:  10:00 p.m.-11:30 p.m.
Fee: None
Location: Slusser Senior Center
Instructor: None

This is the old Needlework Group, which has started meeting again.  Bring your own needlework (crocheting, knitting, quilting, etc.), and socialize with other Seniors at the same time!


Needle & Craft Group (This activity has been cancelled.)

Dates: Every Thursday (started on July 16, 2009)
Time:  1:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
Fee: None
Location: Slusser Senior Center
Instructor: None

This is a new group which started on July 16, 2009, and will continue to meet every Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Bring your knitting, embroidery, quilting, or any other needlework or handcrafts you wish.  Bring your own materials for the project you are working on.  Have fun exchanging ideas and socializing with other Seniors who have common interests!  There is no fee for this group.


Arts & Crafts Group

Dates: Every Wednesday (started 1/20/2010)
Time:  2:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
Fee: None
Location: Slusser Senior Center
Instructor: None

This is a new group for all Seniors who are interested in doing arts and crafts.  The Arts & Crafts Group meets at the Slusser Senior Center every Wednesday from 2:30-4:30 p.m.  Bring your own materials and the project you're working on.  This is a chance to exchange ideas and socialize with other Seniors who have common interests!  All Seniors are welcome, and there is no charge for joining this group.


Bridge

The Bridge Group meets every Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Slusser Senior Center.  All Seniors age 50+ are welcome.  All experience levels (beginner to advanced) are accepted.  There is no cost.  For more information, call the Slusser Senior Center at 746-3800.


Bingo

Dates: First and Third Friday of each Month
Time:  1:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m.
Fee:  $2.50 and up
Location: Slusser Senior Center

Bingo is held at the Slusser Senior Center on the first and third Fridays of each month at 1:00 p.m.  Cost is $2.50 and up. Card prices vary.  This is a fun activity, with plenty of opportunity for socializing with other Seniors.  Cash prizes are awarded!  During some months, Bingo is held on different days.  To find out when Bingo will be held, come in and pick up a monthly calendar at the Slusser Senior Center, or check out the Recreation Calendar on the Town's web site, which is www.hopkinton-nh.gov.  Click on the link for the Slusser Senior Center page, then click on the link for the Recreation Calendar.


Ping-Pong

Dates: Every Wednesday and Thursday, or drop in at any time the Fitness Room is not being used.
Time:  1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m.
Fee:    None
Location: Slusser Senior Center

There is a ping-pong table in the Fitness Room (downstairs level of the Slusser Senior Center).  Any Senior age 50+ can play, from beginners to advanced levels.  Come join the fun and make new friends!  Seniors can drop in to play ping-pong at any time that the Fitness Room is not being used.  Pick up a copy of the monthly calendar at the front desk of the Slusser Senior Center, or call the Senior Center at 746-3800 to find out when the Fitness Room is free.


Nintendo Wii

Not just for kids.  This video game unit is for adults, too!  Keep your mind and body fit.  This video game is located in the Game Room on the lower level of the Senior Center.  Classes are offered and taught by our youth.  For a class schedule, check at the front desk at the Slusser Senior Center.  There is no cost for this activity.


Game Room

There is a Game Room on the ground level of the Slusser Senior Center, which is open to all Seniors age 50 and older, Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  The Game Room has a lending library, card tables, and a pool table.  Drop in and play pool on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  There is also a TV (which is hooked up to cable) and a DVD player in the Game Room.

Come and enjoy yourself in your spare time, and bring one or more friends with you!


Trips, Outings, and Special Events

Casino Trips  (Next Casino Trip: To Be Announced)

The Hopkinton and Bow Recreation Departments co-sponsor one-day Casino Trips to the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut twice a year. The bus is a luxury coach with rest rooms and TV's.  The bus leaves the Slusser Senior Center in Contoocook at 7:30 a.m., and picks up passengers in Bow about 8:00 a.m.  Time at the Casino is from about 10:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The bus arrives back at the Slusser Senior Center in Contoocook about 7:30 p.m. or 8:00 p.m.  The cost is $40.00 per passenger (cost for each trip may vary).  Each person receives a lunch voucher for the buffet (a $15.00 value) and $25.00 in bet vouchers for either the Big Wheel or Skip-Bo (this is open to anyone over 21 years of age).

When a Casino Trip is scheduled, it is advertised by a flyer on the bulletin board at the Slusser Senior Center and on the monthly calendar of activities (also available at the Slusser Senior Center's front desk).  The trips are also included on the Recreation Calendar on the Hopkinton Website (www.hopkinton-nh.gov).  Go to the website and click on Slusser Senior Center, then click on Recreation Calendar.

Movies

During the winter months, movies are shown at the Slusser Senior Center Dining Room for any interested Seniors age 50+.  All Seniors have input regarding the movies that are shown.  The movie starts at 1:00 p.m. or 1:15 p.m. and ends about 3:00 p.m. or 3:15 p.m.  Coffee, sodas, and popcorn are provided.  This event is free.  To find out when movies are scheduled, please pick up a copy of the monthly Senior Activities Calendar at the front desk at the Slusser Senior Center, or go to the town's web site at www.hopkinton-nh.gov, and click on the link called "Recreation Calendar".

Harvest Bazaar/Yard Sale

The first Harvest Bazaar (indoor yard sale) was held in October 2008 at the Slusser Senior Center.  The event was very well attended by people of all ages in the community, and was a great success!  There were tables for homemade baked goods, crafts, jewelry, linens and glassware, children's toys, books, Christmas items, and much more!  We even had a Fortune Teller for the day!  

The second annual Yard Sale was held on Saturday, October 3, 2009, in the Dining Room at the Slusser Senior Center.   Items for sale included delicious home-made baked goods, jewelry, linens, glassware, books, household appliances, furniture, exercise equipment, Christmas items, and  more!  Free coffee was available, and hot dogs and hamburgers were on sale for lunch.  Proceeds from the Yard Sale will go to benefit the Slusser Senior Center.  A drawing of the raffle tickets was held at 2:00 p.m., and the winners of the raffle prizes were announced.

Volunteer Luncheon (held once a year, during National Volunteer Week)

The first annual Volunteer Luncheon was held during National Volunteer Week, on Friday, April 24, 2009, at the Slusser Senior Center.  This Volunteer Luncheon will be held during National Volunteer Week each year from now on.  The purpose of this luncheon is to honor and thank all of the people who have volunteered their time and talents to the Slusser Senior Center during the past year.  Prior to this event, all the volunteers voted for two people to receive a special Volunteer of the Year award at the Volunteer Luncheon.  The Volunteers of the Year selected for 2008-2009 were Ken Wilkens and Janet Krzyzaniak.

Holiday Parties

All of the following holiday parties are held at the Slusser Senior Center, and are free of charge.  To find out when these parties are scheduled, pick up a monthly calendar of activities at the front desk at the Slusser Senior Center, or look at the Recreation Calendar on the Town of Hopkinton website.  Go to www.hopkinton-nh.gov and click on Recreation, then click on Recreation Calendar (in the box at the bottom of the Recreation page.)

Halloween Costume Party

A Halloween Costume Party is held in October.  There are light refreshments and music, and prizes are given for the best Halloween costumes!

December Holiday Party

A holiday party is held in mid-December.  Light refreshments are provided.  Come and listen to or sing along with the music of the season!

Mardi Gras Party

A Mardi Gras Party is held during the last week of February.  Light refreshments are served.  LIsten to and/or dance to swing and Cajun music!  Come in costume, if you wish.
