What is Greener Hopkinton?
Greener Hopkinton is a committee appointed by the Selectmen to “recommend local steps to save energy and reduce emissions.” Greener Hopkinton is now sponsoring a contest to select three designs for use on re-useable canvas shopping bags, one design from the Harold Martin, Maple Street and the Junior/Senior High School. Students are invited to submit TO THEIR ART TEACHER designs that illustrate what a
“greener,” more sustainable Hopkinton would look like, or ways in which our town can become a more environmentally responsible community. Each design, in pencil, ink or color, is to be submitted on an 8 ?” x 11” piece of white paper by the end of the school day on TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9. Three finalists will be selected from each school. One winner from each school will then be selected by our celebrity judges: Tom Burack, Commissioner, Department of Environmental Services, Rose Hanson, Hopkinton historian, and award-winning artist Annie Frye.
The three winning designs will be silk-screened onto re-useable canvas shopping bags. The use of canvas bags saves resources and could prevent billions of plastic bags from ending up in our landfills, or harming a wide variety of animals and sea creatures and damaging our environment.
