Kimball Lake Cabins
In October of 2013, the Board of Selectmen charged a group of residents to determine if the cabins should be repaired or if some or all should be removed and to recommend adding a structure of some kind to enhance the use of the property. In January of 2014, the committee recommended to restore the remaining 4 cabins and develop a master plan that included to conserve and preserve the cabins, maintain the area keeping in mind the historic heritage, encourage ongoing and future event and to develop new uses for the property.
The New Hampshire reservation Alliance chose Kimball Lake Cabins as one of the Seven to Save endangered historic properties for 2014.
Over the last two years, this dedicated group of volunteers has completed Phase 1 that included the restoration work on Cabin #1, also know as the big cabin. The following work was completed:
- Unsafe porch was removed and replaced with replica materials
- All windows were removed, repaired, painted and reinstalled
- Large front steps removed and replaced
- Handicap access ramp installed
- Wiring and lighting brought up to code
- Interior cleaned, repaired, painted and brought up to code
- New metal roof installed
- Failed exterior log chinking removed and re-chinked with new log cabin chinking material
- Cabin exterior scraped and stained.
- Wood stove installed into fireplace, with new chimney liner and chimney cap
- Cabin skirting removed, repaired, reinstalled and stained
- Lawn regarded and re-seeded
- Original Horseshoe Trail Camp signed located and on-site as a loan from owner
- Other historic photos, signs, etc. located and with the Hopkinton Historical Society
In the spring of 2017, the committee will being Phase 2. This will include making restorations to Cabin #3 that will include the same work that was undertake on Cabin #1. Dan Rinden chose as his Eagle Scout project to undertake the removal of the port and to rebuild with replica materials.
The community has been very supportive by giving monetary donations to purchase the building materials needed. Our progress is entirely dependent upon donations and volunteers who have offered their expertise.
