Part-Time Building Inspector / Code Enforcement Officer

The Town of Hopkinton is seeking an experienced, customer-focused professional to serve as our Part-Time Building Inspector / Code Enforcement Officer. This position plays an important role in helping ensure safe, high-quality development throughout our community while providing exceptional service to residents, contractors, business owners, and design professionals.

Working under the direction of the Planning Director, the successful candidate will review permit applications, conduct building inspections, interpret and enforce applicable building codes, and assist property owners and contractors in navigating the permitting process. This position averages 8–16 hours per week, with flexibility based on development activity.

What You'll Do

  • Review building permit applications, construction plans, and supporting documentation
  • Conduct inspections of residential, commercial, and municipal construction projects
  • Perform foundation, framing, insulation, life safety, and final occupancy inspections
  • Interpret and enforce the New Hampshire State Building Code and related regulations
  • Issue permits, certificates, correction notices, and other code enforcement documents as authorized
  • Investigate code compliance complaints and unsafe structures
  • Provide technical assistance to property owners, contractors, architects, engineers, and developers
  • Maintain inspection records, reports, and permit files
  • Coordinate with the Planning Department, Fire Department, and other municipal officials on development projects
  • Stay current on changes to building codes, inspection practices, and industry standards

What We're Looking For

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Associate's degree or higher in construction technology, architecture, engineering technology, construction management, or a related field preferred)
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in building construction, inspection, code enforcement, architecture, engineering, construction management, or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Thorough knowledge of residential and commercial construction methods and applicable building codes
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and technical documents
  • Strong communication, customer service, and organizational skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and permit tracking software
  • Valid New Hampshire driver's license
  • ICC certification as a Building Inspector, Plans Examiner, or Code Official is preferred (or the ability to obtain certification within a reasonable period following appointment)
